What We Do

We are determined to follow the New Testament pattern for the organization, work and worship of the church. We want to be able to show "book, chapter, and verse" for all of our practices.

Our mission is simple. Since the Lord's church is the "pillar and ground of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:15), our purpose is to promote the teachings of Christ and to give our greatest effort to live by those teachings (John 1:14; 14:6; 2 John 9). Many religious groups have shifted their focus from spiritual teaching to social and recreational activities. This shift in emphasis has resulted in a neglect of man's most important need, i.e., preparing the soul to meet its Maker (Mark 8:36-37). Christians are commanded, "whatever you do in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus" (Colossians 3:17); this means that our teaching and practice must be authorized by the New Testament. We, at New Bern Church of Christ, strive to meet this divine requirement both in our lives and in our work together as a congregation.

If you were to visit our services you would observe that we follow the same arrangement as New Testament churches did under the direction of the Lord's apostles. We sing "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs" together . We teach the Word of God (Acts 2:42). On the first day of the week (Sunday) we also commemorate the death of Christ (Matthew 26:26-29; Acts 20:7) in Communion of the Lord's Supper. We contribute from our earnings and possessions for the advancement of the cause of Christ in the areas of evangelism, edification through teaching and benevolence (1 Corinthians 9:14; Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5). In summary, we strive to maintain an orderly service together (1 Corinthians 14:40).

Our Interest in You

Our interest in you is related to your eternal salvation. We want to do all we can in helping you to serve God faithfully. We are not interested in your money or material possessions. In fact, we do not solicit money from any visitors when the collection is taken on Sunday.
